Music is so elusive. One moment here and then gone. Yet the written manuscript is the process of providing continual new life to the composition. My attention to the written and painted word, the symbol of man, has given me a desire to paint these symbols in my own personal mode of expression. I have produced a system of symbols, a calligraphic musical language that expresses the feeling I have for the music I compose and perform. It is also an emotional response to the music I listen to while creating these paintings.
As a musician, my language is the sound of my mind, the music I have yet to compose, the words too deep for utterance; splashes of color that produce harmony, crescendo, diminuendo, turbulence and peace.
The palette I use for these musical compositions, on canvas and paper, are impressions of the music I hear that feeds and renews me. These colors and symbols are music, meditation and dance. One moment a Bach fugue, the next, a Cajun dance tune. From a contemplative old Welch hymn or Gregorian Chant to a be-bop jazz ensemble, I want to express the fulness of life as experienced through visual art and music.
If indeed colors have corresponding sound vibrations, I intend to explore their relationship with my own use of the two mediums. I want the art and music I make to enhance each other so the total environment will have an uplifting effect.
I want these paintings to touch the same emotional chord that a beautiful piece of music does.
